G. Grandige was the referee. Chris Piper was a trialist and he opened the Leeds scoring after just eleven minutes, when he scored from six yards from a low centre from the right from Carl Shutt. Bob Gauden equalized for Bridlington five minutes later and then the home side took the lead with a goal from Dave Travis five minutes before Half-Time. Darren Edmonds replaced Vince Hilaire at Outside Left and Neil Parsley replaced Gary Williams at Right Back at Half Time. It did not take United long to equalize. After one minute of the second half a Gary Speed free-kick rattled the cross-bar then a minute later, trialist Chris Piper got his second after a long throw had been launched into the home area and from the knock on he reacted quickly to get the ball in the net. John Pearson replaced Carl Shutt at Inside Right after sixty-two minutes. On the sixty-seven minute mark, Neil Edwards pulled off a fine relex save, but he was beaten in the next minute as Dave Whiteman powered in a bullet-header for the winner. Russell Wigley replaced Mike Whitlow at Outside Right after sixty-eight minutes and Peter Maguire replaced Chris Piper after seventy-five minutes.
